If you work in an industrial setting, you will be familiar with the noise the operations produce. Some facilities can be dangerously loud on a daily basis. Therefore, to avoid the problems the noise brings, it is a good idea to use silencers. These installations attach to your machines and systems, minimising the sounds they produce. We are a business excelling in providing numerous designs. This includes the blowdown silencer as well as many others.
Boiler blowdowns are essential for everything to work. What they do is remove impurities from the water to preserve proper water chemistry. If you don’t get rid of them, they contribute to the degradation of instruments and valves. All these components and others are necessary for effective boiler control and operation. In addition, the impurities can cause noises like popping, creating more issues.
There are multiple boiler blowdowns in existence. The one we want to talk about here is the blowdown separator. We will discuss general details as well as the advantages and disadvantages.
How does it work?
This separator is a vessel that’s meant to lower the pressurised blowdown from your boiler to atmospheric conditions. It does so by permitting steam flashing to happen. Blowdown of a boiler happens when the boiler is under pressure. Thus, the removed water remains at the boiler’s operating temperature and pressure. As it is inherently full of impurities, you need to direct the water to a drain. First, you need to condition it to do so.
Your first job here should be bringing down the pressure from boiler to atmospheric pressure. This will lead to the high temperature water flashing at a specific % off to steam immediately. Normally, an aftercooler is included here too. It is so you can cool the water down further to <140ºF. This is the sanitary drain’s standard maximum.
Advantages and disadvantages
For positives, there is the vessel’s compact footprint. To word it differently, it won’t take up much space in your boiler room. So, it is a great option if you don’t have much free space.
As for disadvantages, the flash steam generated represents lost energy to the atmosphere. It’s energy you could have utilised elsewhere if captured. Also, aftercooling happens using colder city water. This is an extra expense for you to consider. Lastly, there are places that have put a ban on the use of blowdown separators.
