Finalists from around the globe head to Goa!
This years SDC global design competition has captured the imagination of budding young designers worldwide.
The brief, once again primarily concerned with the creative use of colour in fashion or textiles, also asked the students to demonstrate – for the first time ever in any SDC design competition – an element of sustainable thinking in their submissions, either within the original design itself and/or in the final design application.
The competition has been run in conjunction with SDC regions/affiliates around the globe, with SDC India playing host to the grand final and thus eligible to enter two students to the grand final, one from each of the SDC regions in India.
Working to a universal brief, each country was responsible for organising, judging and sponsoring the local heats and the finalists have all now been selected:
Australia: Angelina Anderson, TAFE NSW Sydney Institute.
Bangladesh: Nabil Hasan Khan, BGMEA Institute of Fashion and Technology.
China: XiYue Zhao Jiangnan University.
Hong Kong: Wong Chau Hung (Denise), Hong Kong Design Institute.
India: Mumbai: Bijal Vora, Nirmala Niketan College of Home Science.
Tirupur: C S Balaji, PSG College of Technology.
Pakistan: Nadia Khan, IQRA University, Islamabad.
South Africa: Moipone Qekisi, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
UK: Nancy Taplin, Colchester School of Art and Design.
USA: Erika Neumayer, Dominican University in Chicago.
As part of their prize, each of these students will attend the grand final of the global competition (sponsored by VeriVide and Pantone) in Goa, India.
This will be held in conjunction with the SDC international conference on 25–26 June 2009.
The global winner and recipient of the SDC Colour Design Award 2009 will be announced at the awards dinner (sponsored by Clariant) on 26 June 2009 and will be presented with a cheque for £1000 and the Veronica Bell Trophy.
The work of all the finalists will be included in a special exhibition on 26 June prior to the awards dinner.
