Recently we provided production for "Alexandrite" by Tessa Lynch . This was a collaborative performance piece at the Ratho International climbing arena. The piece involved the audience being shepherded to different viewing areas and performances in most areas of the vast arena including a 15 minute cinema section onto a 7m banner / screen.
We had to light 10 separate areas, and follow action across the whole arena in addition to providing two medium - large scale video projections, a sound system for the cinema section and mains distribution for the band, (placed 5m up on 2 giant boulders). Around 60 par 36 and par 64 led spots and linear wash battons were used to light the different areas of climbing walls and boulders and 3 follow spots picked out solo performers and climbers throughout the piece. Even due to the limited set up time, only one run through and the fact that the arena has a glass roof meaning that the only time in was dark enough for the lighting and projection was seen properly was during the performance itself, all went very well. A particular nice effect being when we projected previously shot footage of climbers exactly back onto the wall with the projector in the same position the camera had been and then the performers climbed with and over the virtual climbers.
In particular Its good to know that if you really want to, two guys plus a couple of volunteers can turn up in a van and light an arena scale performance... .
