The oxygen flask method for the determination of chlorine in organic and inorganic compounds consists of a combustion procedure followed by appropriate titrimetric determination. Combustion of the sample in oxygen yields water-soluble inorganic products, percentage chlorine is determined by potentiometric titration or titration with Mercuric Nitrate solution using diphenylcarbazone indicator. Chlorine analysis in the presence of Chromium, Molybdenum or Mercury is not recommended.
