Particle size analysis is performed by a laser light scattering technique using a
Malvern Mastersizer X.
This is an extremely flexible sizing technique which is able, in principle, to measure the size structure of any one material phase in another.
The instrument has many advantages including:
Non destructive analysis as it uses a low power laser.
Versatility as it can be used to measure both solids and emulsions.
It is fast, precise, absolute and has a wide dynamic range (0.1 - 600µm).
Requirements include:
That the refractive index of the material to be sized must be different from the support medium.
The support medium must be transparent to the laser wavelength (633 nm).
Sample Requirements: Minimum 25 mg.
Other Requirements: Solubility data, COSHH data.
