Requirement
The Wernick Group invested £3 million into its site in Wickford, home to a Wernick Buildings and Hire depot and the head office. The project aimed to modernise working space for staff – the buildings had changed very little since the site was first occupied in the 80s.
Wernick Buildings, based in South Wales, manufactured and supplied a new PMflex® building for the depot on one side of the estate.
Then, in the head office’s car park, they began the installation of the new head office building. This allowed staff to continue working in the old building while work took place over the road.
Wernick used the build as an opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of the Swiftplan® modular system, as well as the speed, efficiency and sustainability of modular construction.
Solution
Using the Swiftplan® building system allowed Wernick Buildings’ in-house architectural team to push the limits of offsite construction.
The system allows for the addition of architectural features – in this case, Wernick incorporated a double-height steel structure which became the building’s distinctive glass lobby. Externally, the system allowed for the addition of Trespa external wall cladding a timber Brise Soleil feature.
Within the building, the open and light reception area leads into air-conditioned, open plan offices, glass-partitioned meeting rooms, an impressive board room, staff welfare facilities (including a shower) and a canteen with state-of-the-art catering facilities.
Choosing a modular building results in lower U-values, reducing heat loss and energy consumption. With the addition of photovoltaics (PV) panels on the roof, electric car charging points and nesting boxes for swifts the building achieved an EPC rating of ‘A’ and a BREEAM rating of excellent.
The project has completely transformed the working environment for staff, and visitors can see first-hand the possibilities of Wernick’s latest modular system.
