Moving home? Packing materials explained
07-06-2023
We often get asked the question, what packing materials should I be using for moving home? The easiest answer is this - if you have a removal company lined up to move your items from A-B, it's worth getting them to do the packing for you, since they have extensive knowledge of how different items should be packed correctly, will supply the materials, and will do it quicker than the rest of us!
But, if you wish to pack your own items then below are a list of commonly used Packaging materials in the removals industry...take a read. P.S, if you have any questions about this blog, pop them in the comments below and we'll get back to you!
Boxes - there's normally what we call a Pack 2s, 3s & 6s, although some others would call them Books, Chinas, Generals and Wardrobes. Either way, we've listed out the names, sizes and uses below :)
Pack 2 / China - 453x453x492mm (18 x 18 x 20") - as the name suggests, its a box you would use to pack your chinaware/glassware in. Being an extra tough box and able to take some impact from movement, they provide a stable base to transport all things fragile. Buy them here.
Pack 3 / General - 453x453x750mm (18 x 18 x 30") - as the name suggests, this is for pretty much anything you can fit into it! With multi-depth scores the box can be cut down to size or folded in multiple places to achieve the correct fit. Buy them here.
Pack 6 / Book - 453x300x330mm (18 x 18 x 12") - as the name suggest, get those books off the shelf and into the book box! Made specifically with books in mind, it holds a reasonable amount of any sized books and still keeps the weight to a minimum for safety when moving the box around. Again, Multi-depth scored allows you to cut the box down to fit your needs. Buy them here.
Tissue Paper AF - Tissue is something often underrated but great for a range of things. AF stands for Acid free. Tissue is most commonly used for the wrapping of delicate items such as the plates, glasses, cutlery etc. Although tissue can also be used for lining the bottom of boxes and interleaving to avoid movement in the box during transit and therefore minimise the risk of breakages.
Paper blankets - much like the transit (cloth) blankets but in a tougher, environmentally friendly format. Great for interleaving delicate items, lining boxes, wrapping large heavy objects and protecting furniture during transit.
Cloth (transit) blankets - workhorse of the removals industry and extremely tough. Often used to cover large pieces of furniture in transit of wrap separate pieces of a large item. Avoids dust or scratches on the item. Reusable multiple times.
Bubblewrap - a great product and again, has many uses. Often seen being used to wrap large delicate items such as lamp shades, light fittings, or fragile glass items. If moving house, you will want the small bubblewrap not the large - buy it here.
Which is the best tape to use? Many removal companies opt to use a very reliable vinyl tape, but we have developed a better multi-purpose tape which has a stronger adhesive, low-noise and easy tear. check it out here. Psst...need a tape gun? These premium 2" are the most versatile and work great with our 50mm premium packing tape.
