2023 – The Year of Challenge For Workplace
24-01-2023
How Will 2023 Impact The Workplace
I think it goes without saying that 2023 is going to be a challenger for any workplace, whether you’re office based, the construction industry or something else. At the rear end of last year, we had already seen people struggling to get medical appointments or missing work due to travel issues and it’s likely that’s going to continue going forward. You might be wondering how that impacts the workplace? Well, as with anything when you have sweeping issues across the UK, it’s going to impact workplaces.
Whether it’s employees struggling to get to work or even having operations cancelled, it’s likely going to be you as an employer who has to get your employees through it. And not only that, it was reported last year, was the biggest year for work-related illnesses and that means you need to be doing everything you can to reduce the risk in the workplace for your employees. Keep reading below to find out more about how wellbeing is going to impact the workplace in 2023.
Supporting Your Employees Through NHS Delays
Before the pandemic, NHS waiting times were already stretched and to this day, it certainly hasn’t improved and the ongoing strike action is only going to impact it further. However, we guarantee that as a business you will likely have at least one employee waiting for some type of NHS related treatment, whether it be a simple doctors appointment or surgery and the constant delays and the impact on them as individuals, will impact you as a business. From rearranging schedules and diaries for appointments, to then changing everything again when they are cancelled, the cycle will go on and on. But it’s not only the physical impact, it’s the mental impact that particular employee will be suffering. And because most employees spend as much time at work, as they do at home, you’ll find yourself being an emotional support rod for them. Short courses in mental health or other HR and business related issues, could help you to better manage your employees.
Supporting Your Employees Through Strike Action
From the NHS to public services and even private companies, strike action is taking place across the board. If you commute to a city, then you might take a train to work and be impacted by travel, or you might find yourself without childcare because the schools are on strike, and although many businesses don’t believe it’s their problem, it kind of is. There are rules in place that allow employees to take time off to care for their children or dependants. But, rather than get into politics, look at how you can support them with flexible working or working from home. Most kids are happy with the TV or an ipad, which means your employees day is unlikely to be impacted if they can do the same job from home. But, if you work in something like a trade or your work requires you out on the road, then it’s important for employers to be understanding and support their employees. It’s not like it’s the employees fault, it’s simply the impact of strike action.
Supporting Your Employees Through Work-Related Illnesses and Accidents
Health and safety should be one of the top focusses of any type of workplace, whether you work in the construction industry, whether it’s seasonal work, or whether you’re building based. It’s estimated last year that 30 million working days were lost due to work-related illnesses or accidents, with a cost of around £11.2billion. Health and safety training and specifically courses such as NEBOSH and IOSH, can help to ensure your staff understand current health and safety regulations and how to act in the workplace. Whilst you can’t stop every accident in the workplace, you can certainly reduce the risks to your employees.
