Like the EX430 and EX470, two of its cousins in the EX400 range, the Extech EX420 Digital Multimeter is a useful and reliable multimeter for the professional electrician. The sheer versatility of the device is impressive as it is able to perform 11 different functions including AC/DC voltage (0.1mV - 1000V), AC/DC current (0.1µA - 20A), resistance (400? - 40M?) capacitance (40nF - 100µF), frequency (5Hz - 10MHz), duty cycle (0.1-99%), diode test and continuity as well as thermocouple temperature (-20ºC - +750ºC).

The device boasts Extech’s usual excellent build quality and it is safety-rated EN61010-1 Cat III up to 600V. Furthermore, the EX420 will give audible and visible warnings in instances of mis-connection whilst the fuses add another layer of security for the user.

In addition to the multitude of different electrical variables the device is able to measure, the autoranging function also saves the user time and effort by automatically selecting the best range for the measurements over all 11 possible criteria although manual ranging can be used should the situation so require. With wide value ranges in every field, the EX420 is suitable for the vast majority of regular measurements. The device is easily held in one hand and the low battery indicator means that you will never be caught out by a lack of power. An ergonomic strap is also provided to make transportation easier. The digital display can be backlit to make it more legible and the Auto Power Off function helps conserve battery life. This all adds together to make the product easy to use when out and about.

The EX420 comes with a paper instruction booklet and an instruction manual on a compact mini-disc so the user will be able to keep two separate, permanent records if required. Accessories are also provided for measuring electrical variables and temperature in the form of two test leads and a Type K bead wire temperature probe. Finally, the product comes with a three-year warranty.
