The two-part Fluke 2042 Cable Locator is a useful device for tracing and locating cabling and metallic piping in walls, behind plasterboard and underground up to a maximum depth of 2.5m. The 2042 boasts several advantages over basic cable locators as it can work on both live and dead cables without additional instruments as well as location fuses and tracing conductors in soil. Furthermore, it can also detect faults and short circuits in conductors.

Both the transmitter and the receiver display the signal code in the form of a letter so the user can be sure that the correct cable has been found. As well as providing clear audible feedback, the receiver’s large LCD screen displays this transmission code alongside the strength of the received signal and the external voltage. The signal is digital as standard but the user has the option of an acoustical receiving signal. Furthermore the sensitivity to the receiving signal can be adjusted manually or automatically so the Fluke 2042 is very flexible.

An integrated torch aids work in poorly lit surroundings and both the receiver and the transmitter are portable and light. The two main instruments are supplied in a hard carry case alongside probe tips, crocodile clips, and two sets of test leads so the user is provided with everything required for detailed, speedy cable location/tracing.
