Bridging the gap between a vertical machining centre and a toolroom milling machine with the added operational flexibility provided by a universal inclined head and the incorporation of Heidenhain TNC full three-axis contouring control system, the Ajax AJCBM 750 CNC bed mill is a classic solid construction machine available for under £29,000. Developed by Ajax International Machine Tools of Lymington as a full three-axis Heidenhain TNC 320 controlled machine in preference to more commonly available 2½D systems, the CNC bed mill provides the advantage of common programming techniques with other Heidenhain systems. The Ajax AJCBM 750 machine is the smallest of the AJCBM bed milling range with table sizes that range from 1,270 mm by 280 mm to 1,900 mm by 700 mm. The range is largely based on the highly successful Semco 800 with Anilam control of which more than 50 are still known to be in use within the UK. The Ajax AJCBM 750 weighs in at 2.5 tonnes using strong ribbed iron castings with the added benefits of accuracy and rigidity from hardened and ground solid ways having Turcite B coatings. The turret-style head, incorporating a 5.5 kW inverter driven, variable speed 50 to 3,800 revs/min ISO40 taper spindle, has the advantage of being able to be inclined either to the left or right enabling a universal approach to machining without the need for resetting. Meanwhile, due to the high levels of rigidity the machine is able to mill flats off-centre and on an angle, bore and drill with the precision and flexibility to enable hand feed interruption within the CNC cycle to create ultra-fine holes, for instance. The table is generous at 1,270 mm by 280 mm able to accept loads up to 500 kg with longitudinal travels of 750 mm, cross travels of 420 mm and 500 mm in the vertical axis. The quill provides an independent traverse of 127 mm.
