Providing the flexibility and versatility to enable highly efficient turning operations on single parts or an automated cycle on small repeat batches, Ajax Machine Tools International has specified a range of flat bed electronic lathes for the UK market enabling manual, semi-automatic or automatic CNC cycles to be performed starting at under £20,000. The Ajax Fusion AJF 180 is the smallest capacity machine in the range with a swing over bed of 360 mm and options of 750 mm or 1,000 mm between centres. The machine features a four-way automatic indexing tool post with the option of upgrading to an automatic eight station turret. Fitted with electronic handwheels giving a ‘teach and repeat’ capability assisted by interactive colour screen graphics, these are important user features of the Fagor 8055TC control. As a result the machine has a fast program build-up capability for a simple turning operation or a more complicated part can be programmed by following easy step-by-step drawing based moves. The machining toolpath is also displayed through dynamic graphics simulation giving full-in-cycle verification. Amongst the array of canned cycles available are simple turning, multi-point profiling, grooving, drilling, taper turning and screw cutting with the control even accommodating process elements such as roughing out, finishing and thread repair. As full ISO programming can also be used, offline data can be fed through an RS 232 com port, USB or RJ45 network interface. The Ajax Fusion range of four machines span a swing over bed capacity between 360 mm and 620 mm with between centre distances up to 3,000 mm. The heavy duty cast beds have the advantage of hardened slideways to 400-450 HB and weigh between 1.5 tonnes for the AJF 180 and 3.6 tonnes on the largest AJF 310 machine. Spindle powers across the range are from 7.5 kW to 15 kW. The Ajax Fusion AJF 180 has a 7.5 kW spindle motor with a 4,000 revs/min maximum speed. The main spindle bore size is 42 mm. Feed rates to the carriage are up to 7,000 mm/min with a rapid traverse of 10 m/min. There are two, three-jaw self-centring chucks available at 160 mm and 200 mm and a standard four-jaw independent chuck of 250 mm. The tailstock has a barrel diameter of 58 mm and travel of 180 mm. Options include fixed and travelling steadies, BOB CAD DNC Windows communication software and off-line programming system. A range of toolholding equipment is also available at competitive pricing through Ajax Machine Tools International to suit the universal operation of the machine. A high power coolant system, automatic lubrication and low voltage flood lighting is included. The machine has full surround guarding with slide aside doors giving full access with the control pendant mounted to maximise operator ergonomics.
