A litter campaign reported on our news pages recently has been making headlines by significantly reducing the amount of rubbish dropped on the streets at the same time as raising money for a local charity.
The Bin it for Good initiative saw Birmingham City council join forces with Keep Britain Tidy, The Wrigley Company and the Retail Birmingham Business Improvement District in a bid to reduce littering on the city’s streets. The three month campaign is also being run in seven other areas across England. As part of the scheme, 48 litter bins have been transformed into charity collection pots with money raised for the LoveBrum charity which supports a range of local projects around the city.
The more litter that goes into the 48 bins across the city centre and the less on the ground, the more money the charity will receive. The final payout will be calculated on a sliding scale based on tonnages collected in the designated bins, which have stickers to denote their involvement.
Statistics show a significant increase in the amount of litter deposited as a result of the campaign with 2.03 tonnes of rubbish deposited in the Bin it for Good bins during September 17th-23rd, an increase of 8.9% on the period August 18th-24th. At the same time, litter collected from the streets where the bins are located saw a 30% decrease.
City councillor Lisa Trickett is delighted with the way the scheme is working so far, saying: “The early results are extremely encouraging and would appear to show that this scheme is making a positive contribution towards our aim of achieving cleaner streets in the city centre. This sort of project has been proven to be a success in other parts of the country, so we will continue to closely monitor what happens here. If the good results continue it is definitely something we will consider on a wider basis in future.”
“It is great to see local authorities such as Birmingham and the other participants in the Bin it for Good scheme coming up with innovative ideas to reduce littering,” comments Patience- Atkinson-Gregory of Amberol. “We introduced products such as our WRAP approved Olympic Dual Recycling Bin and novelty bird and animal bins to help improve on the go litter collection, so we are delighted to see the impact that this scheme is having in one of our busiest cities.”
