Common Industrial Saw Terminology Explained

If you’re new to the industrial saw business, you may be unaware with some of the terminology being thrown around the industry.

Maybe you’ve just joined a new line of work, maybe you’re investing in a new machine for the first time, or maybe you just want to get more educated on the terminology used throughout this industry…

Whatever the reasoning, at Anton Saws we’re here to help. Educating is just one of the ways we can! Here is your complete list of common industrial saw terminology explained.

Bandsaw

Bandsaws are large and fixed machines, which can be used to cut a number of thick materials, giving a smooth finish with extreme precision.

Band speed

How fast the blade moves across the material, measured in either feet per minute (FPM) or metres per minute (MPM).

Band wheel

Where the power of the motor is transmitted to the blade. These wheels need to be well balanced to minimise vibration and ensure accurate blade tracking and cutting.

Blade tension

This is the most important part to the machine. It provides the base for consistent and accurate cuts.

Blade thickness

How much the saw measures between either side of the blade.

Blade width

The dimension of the blade from tooth tip to blade back.

Circular saw

Circular saws are designed for straight cuts, cutting smaller pieces more accurately and tasks that require fine and smooth cuts.

Cutting rate

The amount of material removed over a period of time, measured in square inches per minute.

Depth of penetration

How far down into the material the tooth tip penetrates during each cut.

Grip

The overall feel, balance and adjustments that can be made to better accommodate your grip.

Gullet

The curved area at the bottom of the tooth.

Kerf

How much material is removed by each cut of the blade.

Teeth

Sharp protrusions along the cutting side of the saw.

Tooth rate angle

How the tooth is angled when perpendicular to the cutting direction of the saw.

TPI

Teeth per inch, which is the measurement between the gullets. Some materials will require more to cut through than others.

These are some of the most common definitions and terminology you will come across when it comes to industrial saws. As you move into different, specific machines, you will be introduced to more niche terminology – which we can cover at a later date.
