The innovative Gasholders 10, 11 & 12 project in Kings Cross has seen the resurrection of the cylindrical cast iron gasholder columns around a series of studios and 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom apartments. We are delighted to have been able to provide the build with our specialist fire sprinkler valve sets, which appear in every one of the 145 dwellings. The area is inextricably linked to London’s industrial past and the resurrection of the three interlocking gas triplets in this development is a creative project paying heed to the hard work and vision of engineers past and present. The Grade II listed cast-iron gasholders were built between 1860 and 1880. The iconic structures remained in use until the late 20th century and were finally decommissioned in 2000. Gasholders No. 10, 11 and 12, along with No. 8 were dismantled and shipped in pieces to Shepley Engineers in Yorkshire, where the restoration project began. It took 2 years of engineering expertise at the Shepley Plant to painstakingly restore the sculpted canopies. The extraordinary Kings Cross Gasholder Apartments are the brainchild of Wilkinson Eyre Architects offering panoramic, canal-side London living. The circular aspect of the three apartment buildings allows apartments to be centred around a main atria, flooded with light from skylights above. Apartments are surrounded by the elegant cast iron frames of the gasholders. A drum-shaped central courtyard with a water feature represents the point where the three structures meet. The three apartment buildings are proposed at different heights to represent the movement of the original gasholders. The architecture combines a splendid mix of contemporary with Victorian engineering. The apartments boast refined interiors with all of the functional requirements of modern living, including fire sprinkler systems. Interiors are designed by Jonathan Tuckey who is renowned for his work in remodelling and transforming old buildings for modern uses. His work pays special respect to historical context. This iconic development brings the opportunity for urban living at its best. We are absolutely delighted our sprinkler valves are a part of this exciting and dynamic residential development.
