AVT's Technical Director Receives Prestigious Award

Neil Parkinson, Technical Director at South Manchester engineering consultancy, AV Technology (AVT), has joined an elite list of engineering professionals worldwide to be awarded a Fellowship of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Fellowship of the Institution is the highest elected grade of membership and is recognition of members’ expertise, experience, achievements and contributions to the engineering profession. It has only been awarded to two engineers in the North West this year. As Technical Director, Neil has a number of executive responsibilities for AVT, as well as divisional responsibilities for the day-to-day activities of the Special Projects, Visual Inspection, and Noise and Vibration divisions. On receiving his Fellowship, Neil said: “Naturally, I am thrilled that my work has been recognised by the IMechE. Achieving Fellowship status means a lot to me personally and professionally, and I like to think that my efforts have helped with AVT’s continued growth and success. It is a great honour to be acknowledged by the Institution and to be commended for my professionalism and contribution by my peers.” Neil, who has over 30 years engineering experience, joined AVT as a consulting engineer in 1985, and was promoted to the role of Technical Director in 1993. He has been responsible for a variety of structural monitoring projects for the onshore and offshore industries including Sellafield Ltd, British Energy, BP Saltend and Cargill plc. Neil has also instigated a number of pioneering projects during his career. He led the development of a unique vision system for the remote monitoring of cracks in inaccessible walls at an extremely sensitive storage installation. The system uses state of the art camera equipment combined with powerful vision system software to obtain a digital resolution of crack size to within a few microns at a range of 10m.
