A sure stead way to get the product information you need fast Just try a search on your computer, phone or tablet for “felt”. You will mostly be driven towards coloured or craft felts of various qualities, which will mostly be man-made fibres and in the majority of cases will be retail outlets. You may even get lets of information on “Felt Bicycles” (a well known and respected manufacturer by the way) If that’s what you want then great, “bingo“, first search and the choice is yours. However if it’s not what you need, how do you specify your search to bring your results tighter and more relevant?. Reduce your searches to the following “Technical Felt” or “Industrial Felt” Follow the search by typing “UK” after the wordsThere you have it, you should now see a choice of companies in or close to the UK that can offer something other than thin handicraft felt. So you made your choice and you are going to ring up and have a chat with some “expert” at the end of the line who is going to help you find the perfect product for your application. Well we are not experts and we certainly don’t have the answers to all your possible questions, but with the correct information we can point you in the right direction. Here’s a scenario. You have invented a product and you need some felt. You don’t know what felt is or what the different types can do or in what form you are able to buy it in….. Typical Conversation…. This is the one where it can become difficult to advise….. You.… “I want to buy some felt” Supplier.….” Great, what would you like” You…… “I’m not sure exactly” Supplier….. “mmmm. what would you like the felt to do, or how are you going to use it” You…..” Well I’m designing a product and at the moment it’s all a bit hush hush so I can’t go into much detail” Supplier….. “Well we have 10 different felt qualities, each has 12 thickness variations and we have 3 different colour blends” You…” Can I have lots of samples to try and I will choose one of them” At the end of this conversation, you haven’t actually learned anything relevant to your application and the supplier is very possibly not going to send you all his sample stock (you wouldn’t go and buy a carpet and expect a sample of everything in the shop now would you?) A better approach… Now we could get somewhere You….. “I have a product that needs some felt to transfer some thin liquid from a reservoir to a rotating shaft” Supplier.… “Great do you know the thickness of the felt that you might need?” You….. “yes approximately 10mm thick” Supplier.…. “Is the liquid thin like water or light oil?” You… “Yes exactly” Supplier…. “Great I can send some samples to you of products that in our experience perform best in this situation” All sorted. Specifics without giving away overly sensitive information. Most Industrial Felt suppliers can turn to a wealth of historical information on felt applications. You may think that your use of felt is unique and it’s never been done before; that would be a rare thing indeed, but not impossible of course. However there will be applications for felt that would be similar to yours and that knowledge will help the supplier whittle down the choices of product to offer to you, making the whole experience easier and faster.
