Comac Machinery Ltd, 20 years at the forefront of UK’s laminating and adhesive coating industry.
Comac Machinery was formed in 1996 by Gerry Deane, who had previously been on the Boards of Directors of Woodtape Ltd directing production and development of process machinery then of BLP Ltd in Doncaster directing Research and Development whilst managing BLP’s Colchester’s production facility employing over fifty personnel. Chris Eagle joined the Comac Board shortly after its inauguration, directing machine design and engineering. Very soon after, Comac became involved throughout the UK and Europe with the conversion of solvent based adhesive laminating facilities to the use of Reactive polyurethane Adhesive. Comac was one of the first companies in the UK to be involved with this type of adhesive and its US based manufacturer, the first to make and sell it on a commercial scale. Now Comac co-operates with all leading adhesive manufacturers and continues to design and build machines for the replacement window, automotive, panel manufacturers and other industries employing Reactive Polyurethane Hotmelt adhesives. In 2003 Comac was commissioned to design and build a machine to produce Linerless labels. It did so and within an inspirational six months, the first of many Com500 machines, now revered world-wide, was producing linerless labels. This machine has undergone many developments since 2003 to make the Com500 machine one of the most successful in the production of linerless labels in the world. The machines are marketed exclusively world-wide by Ravenwood Packaging Ltd, a leading manufacturer of label applicators. Linerless labels do not require a siliconised release liner, they are self-wound. Although these labels are applied almost exclusively to chilled meat packs, the application of this type of label packaging could be widened to include other types of product and packaging. The absence of the liner reduces packaging costs significantly. It also reduces waste disposal costs, which until 2012, was generally landfill. Recycling of the material was not economically viable. Not only are material costs lower for linerless labels, the automatic application of labels, especially in Ravenwood applicators, is much faster reducing packaging costs further. Comac, co-operating with the world’s leading adhesive companies, is the GB agent for Hardo Maschinenbau GmbH, a world leading manufacturer of roller application machinery and pre-melting devices. Comac also co-operates with Nordson, another world leading company, for slot coating and pre-melting machinery. Comac also designs and manufactures materials handling equipment and automatic systems for the application of adhesive in stripes, patterned and flat / flood and lamination reel to reel, reel to panel and panel to panel.
