The term ‘biodegradable’ on the surface can be misleading, with the initial interpretation being environmentally friendly plastic that creates little waste by decomposing. While it is true these plastics do have biodegradable elements, it is important to know the conditions around decomposition. So what does biodegradable actually mean? By definition it is the term used for the decomposition of materials by the action of microorganisms, the degree and rate of decomposition varies depending on the degradability properties of the substance (see below).
