Insulin is the principle hormone responsible for the control of glucose metabolism. Secretion of insulin is mainly controlled by the plasma glucose concentration and the hormone has a number of important metabolic actions. Insulin concentrations are severely reduced in insulin-dependent diabetes (Type 1 diabetes) and some other conditions such as Hypopituitarism. Insulin concentrations are raised in non-insulin dependent diabetes (Type 2 diabetes), insulinoma and in some types of endocrine dysfunction such as Cushing?s syndrome and acromegaly.
