Your drains are an important system in your home and are crucial for flushing waste away and supplying your household appliances with water. However, it can be easy to use your drain incorrectly or not keep on top of maintenance, resulting in a whole host of problems that can occur over time. Luckily, it’s just as easy to keep your drains clean and prevent them from blocking up.
Read on for our top tips on how to keep your household drains in good condition.
USE THEM CORRECTLY
Use them correctly
One of the main reasons why many households experience problems with their drains, is because they’re using them incorrectly. Flushing the wrong kinds of items down the toilet, for example, or clogging up your kitchen drain with food is not how your drains should be used. Remember, drains are not bins and you should not dispose of your waste this way. Below is a useful checklist of what you should and shouldn’t flush down your drains.
DO FLUSH:
- Toilet paper
- Tea, smooth drinks and coffee (without the grounds)
DON'T FLUSH:
- Sanitary products
- Wipes
- Food
- Paint
- Hair
- Grease, fats and oils
CLEAR THEM REGULARLY
keeping on top of maintenance will reduce the chances of a major blockage or other problems building up in your drains. Invest in a plunger, as these simple and affordable tools are extremely effective at dislodging blockages so water can flow properly and doesn’t rise up. You can also use homemade solutions such as one cup of baking soda with one cup of white vinegar, followed by warm water - this can help break down soap scum and hair. Furthermore, if you can see the blockage, such as a clump of hair, invest in a drain snake that can be used to hook it out and stop it from being pushed in any further.
CHANGE YOUR HABBITS
Simply changing the way you are around the home can save you from clogging up your drains. Here are some things you can try and get in the habit of doing to keep them in good working order:
- Brushing your hair outside of the shower to remove the majority of loose hair
- Getting rid of food waste using the food bins provided by the council or your own compost bin
- Remove grease or fats by wiping them with kitchen roll and throwing them in the bin, or let it solidify and turn it into a bird feeder!
- Educate your children about the importance of not throwing miscellaneous items down the drain, or you may be surprised what ends up down there
