The Master Cutlers Challenge 2024
Durham-Duplex were delighted to pull on their walking boots and do walk in support of eth Master Cutler’s Challenge for 2024 to help raise funds for the Sheffield Cathedral’s Schools Singing Programme which takes music and Choral singing into schools where there is no music in the curriculum.
This year Chris Sugden, the route planner for 2024, came up with a wizard wheeze to enable people of all levels of fitness and walking experience to join in and enjoy a day in the Peak District. He designed a 20 mile route whereby a team starting at Yorkshire Bridge could do Win Hill and cross Birchinlee Moor before linking up with a 10 mile team that went clockwise from Fairholmes Carpark around the Derwent Reservoir. The plan worked, apart from one party that got a bit lost, and the walking groups met on the western side of the Reservoir before all ending up at the Yorkshire Bridge pint for a well earned pint – even the 2 lost sheep that were eventually rescued by a lady called Barbara on route to Langsetts Reservoir and returned to the fold!
Tom Daggett, the Director of Music at the Sheffield Cathedral, said ” All funds raised for the Schools Singing programme are gratefully received and it is particularly nice when people have also had fun raising the cash. I would like to thank Durham-Duplex’s walkers for their efforts and the funds raised which will help deliver our musical programme to young people and raise both their aspirations for life but also develop their confidence by singing together.”
The Master Cutler added “Well done Durham-Duplex and thank you for your support. It is also nice to see that the tradition of finishing together in the pub to replenish the body continues after a decent bit of exercise for a good cause. Thank you for your efforts on behalf of my Challenge and I hope the aches and pains are not too bad today”.
