A Fiery Beginning: The History Behind Bonfire Night:

 

Nearly 419 years ago on the 5th of November 1605, a group of English Catholics, frustrated by the persecution of their faith under King James I, attempted to assassinate the king and members of Parliament in what became known as the Gunpowder Plot. Their leader, Robert Catesby, and a group of conspirators—including the now-famous Guy Fawkes—devised a daring plan: they would detonate 36 barrels of gunpowder hidden beneath the Houses of Parliament, intending to overthrow the government and restore Catholic rule in England.

 

However, the plot was thwarted when authorities received an anonymous tip and discovered Fawkes guarding the explosives. Fawkes was arrested, and the remaining conspirators were tracked down, tried, and executed. The failed plot left a deep impression on the British public and, as a reminder of the event, Parliament declared 5th November a day of thanksgiving. People began marking the occasion with bonfires, a tradition that evolved over time into a celebration featuring fireworks, burning effigies of Guy Fawkes, and gatherings across the UK.

How times have changed!
