Blue Monday is every year on the third Monday of January. Since 2005 this day has been said to be the most depressing day of the year due to the numerous factors that can have an effect on people’s lives. This past week, the day divided a lot of opinions on whether it was a good event to shout about due to the decline in people’s mental health during the pandemic. However, others said that the day gave people the opportunity to open up to friends and family about life and any troubles they might be having. The Story behind Blue Monday: In 2005, a scientist at a university in the UK calculated what the most depressing day of the year would be, taking into consideration weather, failing a new year’s resolution, debt, post- Christmas blues, low motivational levels, and the feeling of needing to take action. The answer to this was the third Monday of every January. Sky Travel, a subsidiary of Sky that closed in 2010, thought they could take advantage of the day by promoting it to try and entice people to buy a holiday. They received a lot of backlash for this, but eventually people would try and change the meaning of Blue Monday, and it also become “Brew Monday.” Brew Monday is an opportunity for individuals to sit down with their favourite hot drink and have a chat with a friend or family member. It was brought in to combat the negativity surrounding Blue Monday and to bring individuals together.
