Remembrance Day: A time to reflect

Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, is a commemorative day observed by Commonwealth countries to remember the men and women who died in the line of duty. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a two-minute silence is held in memory of those we have lost during the two world wars and the conflicts since then. About Armistice Day: World War 1, which is also known as “The Great War”, started in 1914 and lasted until late 1918. The war was fought between Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire, who were known as the Central Powers, against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan, and the USA. On the 11th of November 1918, an armistice was agreed to end the fighting of the First World War. Since then, that day has been commemorated. In the UK, a service is held on the first Sunday after the 11th to mark Armistice Day. The service is held at the Cenotaph in London, and the event is attended by members of the Royal Family and veterans from the armed forces. What Royston Did: The general information you find about the world wars is about what the armed forces did during that period. However, we wanted to look at what Royston (where we are based) did to aid Great Britain. Royston, like every other community in the UK, had a major involvement in the war effort. Many men and women headed to the front line from the town, but back at home, the community did everything they could to help with the war. Certain buildings in the town were used to house troops who were passing through on their way to the front line. The rest of the community rallied together and started do fundraising events and making items of clothing and parcels for the men and women on the frontline. A memorial was erected in 1922 to commemorate the fallen in the community, which can be found on Melbourn Street.
