How to Deter Burglars
Traditionally, August means holiday season: sun, sea, sand, and… coming back to a home that’s been broken into? Sadly, this is very much the case, with burglaries on the rise as criminals heartlessly ransack empty homes while you’re relaxing on holiday.
But G Johns & Sons’ Architectural Ironmonger Jeremy Barltrop has analysed the latest crime data and offers advice on how to deter burglars by securing your home this summer (and all year round).
UK Regions with the Highest Burglary Rates in 2024
‘Burglary rates are notably higher in densely populated urban regions like London and the West Midlands, where urban challenges contribute to crime rates. Crime hotspots in Leeds, Bradford, and Sheffield have also pushed up the burglary rate in West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire. So far, compared to 2023, Lancashire and Bristol have seen a decline in burglaries, but it’s important to stay vigilant and prioritise home security to prevent your home from being targeted.’ – Jeremy Barltrop, Architectural Ironmonger, G Johns & Sons.
Securing your home from burglaries is vital, especially during the summer when many people may be away on holiday, making homes more vulnerable to break-ins:
Protect Your Home – The Basics
- Keep Doors and Windows Locked – Although it might be warm, leaving them open is the easiest way to invite an intruder into your home.
- Store Keys Securely – Avoid storing keys near the front door; instead, store car keys and other valuables in a metal case to block signal booster devices from opportunists
Secure Your Home – Take Action
- Upgrade Locks – Install British Standard 5-lever mortice deadlocks on all external doors
- Protect Yourself – Add a door chain and install a peephole and hinge bolts
- Install a Home Alarm – And use it, even if you’re popping out for 5 minutes. Use a reputable firm that offers interim audits
- Invest in Surveillance – Whether this be CCTV or a smart doorbell that lets you ‘vet’ visitors before opening the door
- Make Your Home ‘Smart’ – Consider opting for a keyless entry system that can be controlled remotely. Make use of smart lighting and timers to turn lights on and off automatically, and use motion sensors outside to increase visibility and deter intruders
- Optimise Outdoor Security – add sturdy locks to sheds/outhouses and gates, and keep ladders and tools secure to prevent them from being used to access your property.
- Add Tactical Plants – Keep shrubs trimmed to prevent intruders from having an ideal hiding spot, and consider planting thorny bushes under windows as more protection
- Display Signage – if CCTV or alarms and a neighbourhood watch are in operation, affix signs as deterrents and they indicate community vigilance
Safeguard Valuables – Be Proactive
- Befriend Neighbours – If you’re away, ask a trustworthy neighbour to take in your bins and monitor your property. Create a neighbourhood chat on social media
- Delay the ‘Wish You Were Here’ Posts – Refrain from posting travel plans on social media and holiday snaps until you return home. You’re basically advertising your home is unoccupied
- Prepare for the Inevitable – Ensure your home insurance policy is up to date and includes theft and damage
- Secure Valuable Items – Record items of notable value and invest in a safe to store items away securely
It’s easy to say, ‘It will never happen to me,’ but take steps to help identify weaknesses in your home. Keep vigilant and proactive to prevent burglary and protect your property.
