Mind the Gap
In 2012-13, the last year there are figures for, 350 people lost their lives due to fire according to the Fire Statistics Great Britain 2012-13, Department for Communities and Local Government.
Although down on previous years there is still more that can be done and from 15th – 21st September the second Fire Door Safety Week takes place to raise awareness of the issue. Fire Door Safety Week is the brainchild of the BWF-Certifire Fire Door Scheme, and on their website they offer help and advice to building owners, building users, facilities managers and contractors.
From advice on simple checks to make sure fire doors are safe, including how to use a gap tester, to choosing a fire door installer, the website is an invaluable source of information.
As part of Fire Door Safety Week, GEZE UK, the UK’s leading door and window control system manufacturer, is offering a free gap tester to any specifier or facilities manager that emails them at info.uk@geze.com during September. Designed to measure the gap between the door frame and door leaf this handy little tool can immediately tell you if the gap around the fire door is more than the recommended 3mm.
Fire safety has always been a priority for GEZE and their comprehensive range of overhead door closers and automatic swing door drives have been extensively tested and awarded appropriate fire certification.
GEZE UK also offer a RIBA approved CPD entitled Designing Effective Heat & Smoke Ventilation that looks at the requirements for selection and specification of fire and smoke venting equipment in residential and commercial properties.
