Himalayan Balsam upgraded to Same Status as JK

Himalayan Balsam is one of over 30 new additions to Schedule 9 of Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) Probably the most notable of these additions is Himalayan Balsam, which inundates water courses across the country. The ammendment comes into force as of the 6th of April 2010 and also includes Giant Knotweed, Hybrid Knotweed and Australian Swap Stone Crop. This change now means that, like Japanese knotweed, it is illegal to allow spread of the proscribed weeds on to neighbouring land. If you have any of the listed invasive weeds near the border of your land take immediate steps to control it. As Himalayan Balsam tends to grow by water courses, it is essential that qualified, registered proffesionals are used to apply herbicide in these situations. If you are in a situation where you have Himalayan Balsam growing on your land and it is close to a water course, you should be aware that an Environment Agency permit is required.
