Smiles All Round at Car Control Day in York
05-10-2013
On a fine summer's day, six of the IMA staff drove in their usual manner to Elvington to join an Ultimate Car Control driving experience run by Robb Gravett’s team. The initial attraction for some in the party, was the chance to drive several different models of high performance Jaguars and sports Volvos. The more serious aim of the day was to be trained to drive safely out of trouble.
Firstly, a slalom exercise taught straight line braking, followed by swift 180° evasive steering. The classroom session was a sobering talk about our responsibilities as drivers, illustrated by the scenario of what would happen if a driver was involved in a crash in which there was a fatality. A superb buffet lunch cheered everyone up, before being introduced to the track on which accelerating, braking and steering were practised. The last exercise was in how to use ABS to advantage. Estimating a car’s braking distance at 30 and 50 mph was the most surprising aspect of the day.
Although there were some squashed and scattered cones along the way, everyone felt that they had achieved significant improvement over the course of the day. Hopefully, everyone has been able to take something into their every-day driving.
At times scary, definitely thrilling, but ultimately instructive, the day was hailed by all as a run-away success.
