Do you know which type of Personal Security Alarm is most reliable?
Winter seems to strike as soon as the clocks go back and the nights draw in. Leaving work in the dark to travel home is not only depressing, but a cause for worry to many.
A good personal security alarm can be a great source of comfort for those of a nervous disposition, or to anyone who has to travel through poorly lit streets or to unfamiliar premises.
There are two basic types of personal security alarm (sometimes referred to as rape alarms or personal attack alarms), those that are "gas operated", and those that are "battery operated".
Gas operated alarms tend to be marginally cheaper, although the cost difference has become minimal now that volume production has forced prices of all types of personal alarm down, so any buying decision is likely to be based on performance reports and/or personal preference.
Our personal experience indicates that gas operated alarms can prove unreliable when operated in very cold weather, and as it is unlikely that anyone would want one alarm for use when its good weather and one for bad, we no longer recommend or sell gas operated units.
The new generation of battery operated personal alarms are not only lightweight and compact, but operate reliably in all weather conditions.
Our new keyring model electronic personal security alarm features; an amazing 130db siren, operates from an easily available alkaline battery (so there won't be any problems finding a replacement battery when you eventually need to change it), has an integral test button so it's easy to test that your alarm is working before you venture out, and has a built-in torch.
When considering buying an electronic personal alarm, you should choose a unit from a reliable manufacturer (and supplier). There are many cheap imports flooding into the UK market, but although these often look similar to quality units externally, inside it is a different story.
Our own Personal Security Alarm units feature quality internal components and electronic circuits, which not only guarantees reliability, but also minimises the power drawn from the battery in standby or operating mode, ...which is why you can expect long operational service between the need to replace the battery.
