Introducing Barry Lowe, Karmelle’s Service Engineer Engineer Barry Lowe joined Karmelle’s labelling department in 2019, quickly becoming a trusted member of the team. Now, he’s been appointed Service Engineer – a role that will take him to customer facilities across the country, and overseas. We caught up with Barry during a rare break in his schedule… What drew you to a career in engineering, Barry? I’ve been interested in how machines work since childhood and was always helping my dad to fix his motorbike or repair car engines. In fact, I think my dad inspired me to become the engineer I am today. What was your route into engineering? I began my career at a company called Taylor Bros in Oldham. I was an apprentice Electronics Engineer, building radio and TV transmitters that were exported all over the world. You initially joined Karmelle’s labelling department – what did this role involve? The role involved building labelling heads, wiring-up sensors, installing software for HMI, PLC and servo motors and gaining an understanding of how labelling machines function. How has your role changed? My role has changed quite a lot, as I’ve recently become a Service Engineer. I’m really enjoying it because I encounter new challenges every day. I look after Karmelle filling machines, capping machines and labelling machines, and provide technical support, and service equipment, both nationally and internationally. My next job is in Greece, where I’ll be helping to install and commission a turnkey liquid packaging line. What’s your favourite aspect of the job? Helping customers to get their machines up and running is really rewarding. Do you have any advice about how best to maintain equipment? Close inspection of the machinery on a weekly basis and regular services, depending on the product! What do you like to do when you’re not building, servicing and repairing machinery? I like going out with friends and family – to the TT races, the theatre, escape rooms, wine tasting and the cinema. I also love reading good book and watching football.
