We talked to Nick Cadby at Nacom Automation Ltd about using Weintek MT8050iE HMIs with analogue PLCs. The speed of the responses I get when I put in a support request is really fast Tell me about yourself – where are you located and what’s your background? We’re based in Chesterfield, and I’ve been working in Industrial Automation for over 30 years. I was a project engineer for a Swiss strapping company and a friend asked me to come and work for him at Advanced Technical Solutions. From there, I started Nacom 18 years ago, and now we’ve grown to a team of 5. There’s 2 sides to the business, Industrial Automation is one part; and about 5 years ago I bought the IP and designs for a printing machine manufacturers…we now have 6 CNC machines and we make printing presses too. What do you do when you’re not at work? I’m married and have 3 kids so when I’m not at work or doing family stuff, I like to relax with a motorbike – I have three in the garage at the moment, different styles depending on what kind of riding I want to do. And I used to play rugby until my knees gave in – now I go and watch when I can instead. What do you love most about your job? It’s all good – I get a lot of fault-finding work on the automation business, which I find really interesting and challenging. Lamonde helped us set up the communication data transfer with the Weintek HMI… How long have you been a Lamonde customer? I don’t remember, it’s been that long. [Editor’s note: we checked our records, and Nick has been a customer since 2012] Tell me about a recent application that we’ve helped you with? We’re a distributor for VIPA (now part of YASKAWA) PLCs and MB Connectline VPNs, and we integrate those into our projects – but we love the Weintek HMIs, which we buy from Lamonde. We use them on our printing machines, and for our clients too. What was the problem that you needed to resolve? We recently used 7 of the 4.3” Weintek MT8050iE HMIs for a client for a winding and unwinding application. Originally we were going to use Modbus TCPIP directly to the device to get them to communicate with each other, but it didn’t work the way we needed. So we put in a call to Lamonde, who helped us set up the communication data transfer with the Weintek HMI; then we put in a PLC with analogues and used the pass-through mode so the tension control units would communicate directly with the winding machines. What stands out most in your memory? The speed of the responses I get when I put in a support request is really fast, which helps us as a company. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Nick.
