Round 5 of the MRO Minitwins championship saw Lamonde Automation sponsored Matt Wetherell competing at Snetterton in Norfolk on the 300 circuit. Snetterton can be a wind-tunnel at the best of times, and this weekend was no exception. In practice on Friday, Matt had a crash, resulting in some bike damage, but thankfully no injury. Having not qualified as well as he could have due to a tyre choice issue for the qualifying session meant he was to start race 1 on Saturday from 27th place, the weather conditions were challenging, but in spite of that, Matt got up to 12th after 1 lap, 10th lap 2, 7th, lap3 and 6th lap 4. In lap 4 Matt was chasing down a fellow rookie and went down a gear too many, locking the back wheel resulting in a spectacular slide. Luckily he was not injured and the bike could be patched up for race 2. In spite of a DNF in race 1, Matt had done well enough to start from 7th on the grid. The sun was out and the track was drying by this point. By the first corner, he was up to 6th overall and a crash in front saw Matt finish 5th place overall and more importantly 1st rookie. Sunday’s racing started with race 3, Matt 5th on the grid, not getting the best start, he jostled for position with fellow rookie, Tommy Downes, unfortunately for Tommy, they came together on a corner resulting in Tommy crashing, thankfully uninjured. Matt finished race 6th overall and 1st rookie. Between races, some remedial work was carried out on Matt’s bike, in particular, Saturday’s repairs to the gear-change needed some further attention. It was also found during the examination of the bike that the rear spring is perhaps too strong for Matt’s weight, which would go some way to explaining the abnormal tyre wear that Matt has experienced. Race 4 , Matt started and finished 6th overall, but importantly 1st rookie. With 3 wins this weekend, Matt is leading the rookie championship with 360 points. The next meeting is Brands Hatch (GP circuit), 14th & 14th July. If you want to follow Matt on Facebook, click here for his page.
