Magnets Aid Glastonbury Clean-Up
10-02-2014
The biggest cost of running the Glastonbury festival is the clearing up afterwards. Magnet Sales has supplied a giant magnet which can be attached to the front of a tractor and used to pick up any magnetic material such as tent pegs and drinks cans.
This magnet was built using over 400 sintered ferrite blocks with 6" x 4" x 1" dimensions (LxWxD). Weighing in at well over a tonne this is the largest magnet assembled by MSS to date. The individual blocks are stacked five high, then twenty one of these stacks are assembled as below to make a layer of the magnet:
Four of these layers are joined to create the finished magnet, which is then embedded inside the hyrdaulic assembly and attached to the tractor. This magnet is powerful enough to lift ferrous material from 10 inches up in the air. This feature is necessary because the fields are so churned up immediately after the festival. As the fields are rolled smooth, the magnet can be lowered closer to the ground, further concentrating the flux in order to pick up anything which may have been missed initially.
