MSS Supplies Magnets for Wind Turbines
05-10-2008
MSS has created a compact yet incredibly powerful magnet for use in wind turbine generators. The magnet is constructed from a Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) alloy, the most powerful magnetic material available.
Several of these magnets are used together to create a ring shaped stator magnet within the wind turbine's generator assembly. The wind drives the turbine, which is connected via a gearbox to a coil of copper wire. This coil rotates within the magnet assembly, which induces an electric current inside the copper wires, thus generating electricity.
Electricity generated by wind turbines is a completely renewable and sustainable source of energy. No harmful greenhouse gases are produced as a by-product, as is the case with coal, oil and gas fired power stations. Current government targets are aiming for 20% of all UK electricity to be produced by off-shore wind farms, a massive increase from the current level of less than 1%. In light of this goal, MSS is looking forward to supplying many more of these magnets in the future.
