Sustainable carton coding with the Martek Aplink Offline Carton Coder.
Hand-applying labels to outer case cartons is not only time-consuming but costly and damaging to the environment. Martek's offline carton coder allows cartons to be printed with text, detailed graphics, barcodes and 2D codes at up to 180x720dpi resolution avoiding the need to apply labels.
The ink cost per carton is typically 6 to 8 times lower than using labels with a single 1-litre bottle of ink printing approximately 225,000 cartons based on replicating 100 x 120mm label but the benefits don't end there... Those 225,000 labels would weigh approximately 350Kg compared to a single 1-litre bottle of ink and, 140Kg of those labels would normally be silicone-coated backing paper that cannot be recycled with other paper products, often ending up in general waste. In addition, the 350Kg of label materials would most likely be manufactured in northern Europe then shipped to a UK-based facility to be slit into reels and shipped to the label converter who produces the rolls of labels and ships those to the end user. In total 350Kg of material makes 3 journeys compared to a 1-litre bottle of ink with considerable haulage carbon impact.
Systems are custom-built to suit the range of carton sizes used using a UBS Aplink inkjet printer with either 72 or 140mm print height. Mineral-free, oil-based ink is used which has been approved by FEFCO for inclusion in cardboard recycling.
