Track side RTU
18-08-2008
Omniflex are providing track-side multiplexing equipment to pass data such as Electrical substation inter-tripping information between railway stations in a reliable and cost-effective way.
On many recent applications the cost of installing new cable infrastructure to accomplish the task was prohibitive and Omniflex were able to provide the most practical approach.
The schemes are based on Omniflex Maxiflex Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) connected together using Omniflex Conet networks. The Conet network is characterised by its very high noise immunity and capability to utilise existing spare cable cores. As the cables are located trackside, the EMC immunity is a very important consideration. The first scheme was successfully put into service with twenty-two stations connected. This solution proves very cost-effective as there is no requirement to re-cable.
The Maxiflex RTUs and, for smaller projects, the M2 RTU product series enable a wide variety of signal types (including I/V, RTD, TC, mV and 4-20mA) to be acquired and distributed. Various communication media may be utilsed including RS-485 (usually Modbus), HART, Ethernet, Fibre-optic, Radio and Conet making the solution very flexible.
