Wireless Telemetry System
04-08-2011
Due to the Success of the Omniflex Wireless Telemetery system installed at the Glastonbury Music Festival in 2010 for ensuring water was delivered across the site effectively, efficiently and economically, the event organisers chose to expand the system for 2011.
As in 2010, once again the Omniflex M2R 'FHSS Radio' RTU's were supplied for this project through Instrumentation and Control product/services supplier 'AM Sensors' based Nr Bridgewater, Somerset. AM Sensors work very closely integrating and successfully supplying the Omniflex Alarm and Telemetry products across many industries within the UK.
The Challenge
Glastonbury Festival is the largest Greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world and
the infrastructure now necessary to host such an event is diverse and complicated. The Glastonbury Festival requires more than 11 million litres of water over a period of five days and there are over 700 hand basins and 100 standpipes located around the site to provide fresh water for drinking and washing. As the festival has grown so to has the demand for a good supply of water to all the facilities across the site.
The conditions for holding this years festival demanded a water pressure of 1.2 bars at the vast number of water outlets. The challenge again was therefore to ensure water pressure measurements at various points around the site were constantly available to the pumping station.
Expanding on the succesful Omniflex radio telemetry system was the best option!
The Solution
Glastonbury chose the Omniflex M2R RTUs once again, adding further M2R slave units at different points on the perimeter of the festival for communicating with the master M2R unit located at the pumping station.
Sequence of Operation
Pressure sensors located in the pipe-work provide 4-20ma analogue input signals into the slave units, which then transmit this data via the 868Mhz un-licensed radio frequency to the master unit situated in the pumping station. This data is then supplied via the RS232/485 Serial modbus port into an ABB controller, which is responsible for bringing on line or taking off line a bank of pumps within the pumping station, dependant on the demand for water.
