Demolition of Barking Power Station
17-08-2021
Barking Power Station used to be a series of power stations in East London. After the demolition of the coal-fired stations in the eighties, a gas-fired station was commissioned between 1992 and 1995. However In 2014 the operator decided to close down this station as well, being no longer being profitable due to the significant rise in the price of gas. The demolition started in 2018, but the gas turbines were to be saved for reuse.
PM packing was asked to design and build cases capable of transporting these turbines. The project took place over a number of months with the cases being designed and built within our facilities in Eastleigh, then the individual components shipped to site for final construction. Each turbine had to be separated into two parts weighing 28 and 34 tons respectively, packed and shipped to the Far East for refurbishment and reuse.
