What is a decontamination air shower?

A decontamination cleanroom air shower is a controlled, self-contained chamber designed to remove contaminants from personnel before they enter or exit a cleanroom or a containment-controlled environment. By using high-velocity, HEPA-filtered air jets, the air shower blows off particles, dust, or other contaminants from clothing, skin, or surfaces.

It is an essential component in cleanroom facilities where maintaining a controlled and sterile environment is critical.

Here’s how PBSC’s Air Shower works:

Entry: Personnel enter the air shower chamber and the PLC automatically turns on the high-performance 24VCD LED Light, controlled by the onboard PLC, which also controls the shower status and alarms. When the shower cycle is started by the operative, the shower controls lock the doors and run the fans to provide the airflow. (Note the shower has a low power usage with a highly efficient fan).

Air Jets: Once the door is closed, high-velocity air nozzles blow air from various angles. These air jets are designed to ensure uniform coverage and distribution of the filtered air and can reach speeds of around 30–34 m/s (meters per second) through 38mm diameter nozzles, effectively dislodging and removing particulate matter.

Filtration: The air blown inside the shower is filtered through HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters to ensure that the air is clean and that particles are trapped and removed from circulation.

Exhaust and Recirculation: Contaminants removed from the surfaces are drawn into the air shower’s filtration system, where they’re filtered and recirculated back as clean air.

Exit: After the cleaning process, individuals or objects exit the air shower into the cleanroom or controlled facility, with significantly fewer contaminants.
