Saving money with plastic forming
16-03-2016
Vacuum forming is an economical process for creating prototypes, small runs of large products and medium sized batches of components. With sophisticated modern machinery, the process can also be used to continually manufacture large-run items like yoghurt pots with minimal downtime. The technique is one of the oldest methods of working with thermoplastics and remains popular because it provides so many fantastic benefits.
One of the biggest advantages of vacuum forming is the low tooling costs. Moulds can be made relatively cheaply by using inexpensive materials. The process only requires a small amount of pressure to form the parts because of the heat used to make the plastic sheet pliable. This means the mould does not need to be made from a highly durable material, as it would if other techniques were used. This can translate into enormous financial savings, especially when batches are made because the mould can be used repeatedly.
Many different plastics can be vacuum formed to make a wide array of products. This gives you the opportunity to choose the precise characteristics you want the finished piece to have, including durability, impact resistance and flexibility. Alongside this, you can decide whether you want a glossy or matte finish. The list of plastics that can be used is broad and includes PVC, ABS, Polypropylene and polycarbonate.
