Summer is in full swing and you are itching to get out on the water. Are you planning a cruise around the marina in your pleasure boat before launching for your superyacht voyage? Before you leave the marina you’ll want to ensure your pleasure boat is in perfect working order. Luckily, we have the ultimate boat maintenance checklist to keep you organised and to ensure everything is operating smoothly. Read on to learn how to take care of your smaller craft.
Daily Boat Maintenance Checks
Before you head out on the water be sure to run a check of these things below to keep everyone safe onboard.
• Ensure floatation devices are aboard.
• Make sure floatation devices are in good working order.
• Check the first aid kit is present and appropriately stocked.
• Check whether flares are onboard.
• Check the ship’s transmission fluid level.
• Check the ship’s belt tension.
• Inspect the engine oil level.
• Make sure your superyacht has satisfactory coolant and antifreeze levels and refill if needed.
• Check the alignment of the ship’s pulleys.
• Inspect the engine.
• Check the alternator and water pump belts.
Monthly Boat Maintenance Checks
These monthly checks are needed on your pleasure boat to keep it in tip-top condition.
• Make sure your wires (and wire casings) are intact, safe and neatly secured, fixing if necessary.
• Make sure wires are dry — if they are exposed, make sure they aren’t exposed to moisture.
• Ensure your batteries are in good condition, are clean and dry and are operating properly.
• Inspect your ship’s fuses.
• Change the engine’s oil and oil filter.
• Visually inspect the raw water strainer, impeller and pump.
• Clean, and flush, the syphon break.
• Check your sails for any damage and mould.
Yearly Boat Maintenance Checks
The yearly boat maintenance is more involved so you’ll want to take her in to see a professional for these yearly checks.
• Bleed the ship’s fuel system.
• Swap over the primary and secondary fuel filters.
• Inspect diesel tank(s) for damage or contamination.
• Visually inspect the ship’s propeller and shaft.
• Inspect your keel, hull and rudder for damage or deterioration.
• Test the fire alarms (and other alarms) to ensure they are fully operational.
• Get your fire extinguishers officially inspected.
• Make sure lifelines and rails are safe and in good working condition.
• Look for damage to your ship’s decking.
• Check your ship’s bodywork for rust.
• Perform any repairs to bodywork damage.
• Remove the sails and perform a deep clean.
