The Benefits of Plastic Extrusion
Plastic extrusion is a high-volume manufacturing process where a polymer material is melted and pushed through various sizes of dies in a continuous process and formed into a range of products in many different shapes and sizes. The plastic extrusion process has many benefits, so, what are the benefits of plastic extrusion?…
Low-Cost
Compared to other moulding processes, plastic extrusion has a lower cost due to the efficiency of the process. Using plastic as a manufacturing material is also a lot cheaper than using other manufacturing materials such as metal, or wood.
Flexibility
Plastic extrusion can be used to create a wide variety of products in a range of different shapes and sizes, including complex shapes, from a wide range of materials.
High Production Volumes
Plastic extrusion can be used to create large quantities of plastic products at one time and without the high expense, which is great for larger plastic manufacturing companies that need plastic products in large quantities.
No Waste
Plastic extrusion uses thermoplastics, these are plastics that soften when melted and solidify when being cooled – these thermoplastics can handle repeated melting, hardening, and reshaping, meaning any ‘waste’ from previous extrusions can be reused instead of being discarded.
Post Extrusion Alterations
Once removed from the extruder, the plastic used remains hot, which allows for post-extrusion alterations. Many manufacturers take advantage of this and use a range of rollers, shoes, and dies to change the shape of the plastic to the required form.
Industries
Plastic extrusion isn’t just relative to one industry and can be used in all sectors for a range of different applications, including building and construction, automotive, sports, packaging, electrical, and even toys.
