Recycling is something people participate in around the world to help reduce the effects of plastic waste on the earth. Many countries are eager to improve their recycling efforts and integrate these habits into their day to day lives.
So, what are countries doing to help recycle their plastics…
Japan
Citizens are responsible for disposing of their used plastics in the correct way. Prior to throwing away any used plastics, citizens must wash any plastic waste, remove labels, and compact down the material for maximum space and put out for collection on the correct days.
Switzerland
Whilst throwing away their rubbish isn’t an issue, if you displace your recyclable materials with the general waste, citizens will be charged a penalty for their mistake and further educated on recycling.
Germany
Germany has a recycling rate of over 65%, one of the highest in the world! They have strict regulations on recycling and have a dual-stream waste collection system to ensure no piece of recyclable material goes missing and ensure citizens are thoroughly educated on recycling.
South Korea
South Korea are ahead of their game with their recycling efforts. They offer a volume-based waste fee system that charges households and businesses based on the amount of waste they generate, which has increased recycling rates across the country.
Norway
Norway has implemented an effective bottle recycling program where consumers pay a small deposit when purchasing plastic or glass bottles which is then refunded when the bottles are returned to the designated recycling point.
Singapore
Singapore have invested in advanced waste-to-energy plants that convert non-recyclable waste into electricity to reduce the amount of waste they produce. They also offer public education and engagement to help promote recycling and waste reduction.
These are just a few of the things that countries around the world are doing to help recycle their waste and we can’t wait to see what other recycling efforts we start to adapt as the years go by. What efforts are you making to recycle the materials you use?
