The History of Plastic Production and Extrusion

Plastic has been used in manufacturing for many years and there’s no doubt why when you look at its long list of properties and uses.

So, where did it all begin…

The first plastic material was developed in 1907 and has developed into the wonderful range of plastic we know today, including polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, acrylic, and much more. Plastic was first used for things like telephone casings, saucepan handles, electrical sockets, and ashtrays, and once its potential was realised, it quickly consumed most of our everyday products from kitchen appliances to vehicles and construction materials.

In the early 20th century, plastic extrusion began to take shape and became the process we know of today. With the development of new plastic materials, like polyethylene and polypropylene, plastic extrusion was able to create materials for industries such as packaging, construction, and the automotive industry. Plastic extrusion created the ability to produce custom profiles and shapes making it a preferred manufacturing method for all of these industries.

As technology continued to evolve, as did the techniques and materials used during the plastic extrusion process. But what is extrusion? Extrusion began with a simple process of pushing plastic materials through an extrusion die, and although this is still the process, there have been many developments and advancements in the process to create a wide variety of shapes and sizes. As time went on, co-extrusion was introduced which involves combining a mixture of materials into a single profile to create a product with an array of properties like strength, durability, heat resistance, and thermal and electrical insulators. The extrusion process can now create products such as plastic sheets and film, profiles for windows, doors and buildings and parts for cars and other vehicles.

Here at Rayda, we create a wide range of bespoke products through the plastic extrusion process. If you have any plastic enquiries, please contact us today, and we will be more than happy to help.
