The use of Plastic in Household Appliances
Plastic is one of the most commonly used materials all over the world, and if you take a look around yourself right now, chances are most things are made from plastic and you didn’t even realise it.
Plastic can be used for many products for many different reasons whether it’s electrical insulation, heat insulation, durability, lightweight, energy efficiency or freedom of design. Plastic is the perfect material for many appliances. The majority of plastic can be recycled and repurposed into something else.
Household Appliances
Looking around your home, you could probably point out at least five household appliances that are made from plastic some of these things may include:
White Goods – many appliances like fridges and freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, air conditioners and ovens are all made from plastic due to its durability.
Brown Goods – appliances like DVD players, radios, TVs, computers, and lights are most commonly made from plastic materials. This is because the plastics are durable and are resistant to heat and electricity, which is perfect for these appliances.
Tools – many tools you use at home and in the garden are made from plastic materials. This includes things such as handles for drills, paint-strippers, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and vacuums. This is because plastic materials are fire and impact-resistant, making the tools durable when being used.
Office Equipment – Many items that you use in your home office are made from plastic materials, this includes things like keyboards, telephones, photocopiers, computers and keyboard mice.
Without plastic materials the appliances and products we use every day would not be as durable to their surroundings as they are. Around 40% of household appliances are made from plastic, so no wonder we rely on it so much.
Not only are most household appliances made from plastic, but many other useful objects in homes are also made from plastic. This includes things like window frames, door frames, bathtubs and showers, gutters, and pipes. Did you know that we reprocess around 24,000 kg of old window frames a month into new products for the building industry?
The plastic product possibilities are endless, and we continue to see more and more products being made from plastic every year… I wonder what will be next.
