Bottle to Bottle with Plastic Extrusion The ALPLA Group is a world leader in plastic packaging and recycling solutions and has teamed up with Ecohelp SRL and United Polymer Trading AG in its efforts to build on its sustainability objectives. The company aim to establish a bottle-to-bottle cycle, especially in areas where collection and recycling plastic is lacking, such as eastern and central Europe. Together with Ecohelp, ALPLA is investing in the construction of a recycling plant in Târgu Murez, where they will invest in the installation of an extrusion line, enabling the recycling of plastic bottles. This means that the extrusion process will use granules produced from the recycling process to manufacture new preforms and bottles, helping to strengthen the bottle-to-bottle cycle. What is the Aim? Via this new extrusion installation is an annual production of 15000 tonnes of post-consumer recycled PET, a huge sustainability achievement for the eastern and central European recycling industry. Georg Lässer, Head of Corporate Recycling at ALPLA, says; “We are seeing consistently growing demand from our customers for recycled material, and this demand is worldwide and unbroken. It and our customers’ need to close local material cycles give us an opportunity to boost investment projects like these. With our two partners, we have brought together our different areas of expertise and are looking forward to a new form of collaboration.” Working Together By working together, ALPLA is able to bring its expertise as a recycling specialist and manufacturer of bottles, while Ecohelp provides the PET flakes to be used in the extrusion process. This ensures the production of high-quality rPET granules. United Polymer Trading owns the rPET Cumapol Emmen recycling plant, with a specialist in plastic and recycled material trading. In total, E7.5 million has been invested with 15 new jobs created.
