Coca Cola Join Forces for River Clean
20-08-2021
Coca Cola has announced that they will be partnering up with The Ocean Cleanup Project in a collaboration that will see 15 highly polluting rivers cleaned of plastic pollution, by 2022.
The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organisation that works to develop scalable technology that can be used in the removal of legacy plastic from our oceans, as well as intercepting river plastic before it enters the sea.
They are a small organisation and so rely on the support of larger companies such as Coca Cola for the infrastructure required to carry out these ambitious projects.
The collaboration will see Coca Cola become the project’s first Global Implementation Partner. This is not just a fancy title, the company will play a large part in enabling the project to work, from facilitating governments involvements right through to sourcing local funding and organising the handling of waste.
Coca Cola has been working towards their global packaging strategy which aims to see everything they sell returned to them by 2030, however, this project is helping them meet their World Without Waste goal in the meantime.
The Ocean Cleanup project works on the premise that it’s a job that requires everyone’s involvement and so is not simply looking for ‘badging’ partners.
What is the River Interceptor Solution?
80% of all riverine plastic entering the oceans comes from just 1000 rivers globally. The collaborative project is focusing on 15 of the most highly polluting rivers, where they will collect the plastic waste and recycle what is able.
The aim is to complete this by 2022.
The 15 rivers will be chosen based on their impact on plastic pollution and the presence of existing waste management systems. South East Asia and Central America will both be big contenders in this.
