Greiner Packaging previously announced their goal for their Dungannon plant to become carbon neutral by 2025 and they have just become another step closer.
The well-established plastic manufacturer has confirmed a recent £3.7 million investment in new PET decontamination and extrusion line. This investment will allow the manufacturing process to considerably increase the amount of recycled material that’s included in their pot and tub range.
While Greiner Packing has not chosen to disclose who the supplier for the new line is, they have explained how it will be integrated into the feed system in Ireland.
In order to create food-safe material, recycled flake will enter the system to be cleaned and decontaminated by removing impurities. As it is integrated directly with the Dungannon factory’s existing feed system, it will lead straight onto the extrusion line.
This means that the system can process recycled, virgin, or combined input materials for true flexibility. Due to the seamless integration of the new equipment into the supply chain, they soon hope to be able to produce all their products with up to 30% recycled content.
Why such a big investment? Well, Greiner Packaging has always had a focus on investment, both for new product innovations (such as the introduction in 2007 of the K3) and for improving sustainability to achieve a circular economy.
The company is extremely committed to the goal of Dungannon becoming carbon neutral and have been transitioning to renewable energy sources since 2019. They expect to achieve this in 2021.
