Veka Recycling Ltd, a market leader in the recycling of PVC-u, have announced that they will be investing £8 million into a new plant in the UK.
The plant will be dedicated to the recycling of PVC-u widow and door profiles and will be based in Wellingborough. Veka has described the plant as a commitment to the UK, post BREXIT. It is the third of its kind, with the other two being built in Germany and France, respectively.
The plant is set to be the most advanced of its kind within Europe and is a clear indicator that attitudes and hesitancy towards the use of recycled materials in the production of new windows is waning.
Combined, the three plants are hailed to boast a capacity of 100,000 tons of PVC-u windows, each year.
What will the plant do?
The Wellingborough plant will accept and convert PVC-u virgin and end-of-life window and door profiles into renewable plastics. The goal is to provide an alternative to landfill as this is not appropriate for PVC-u, due to it not breaking down or degrading, instead of sitting in the environment for hundreds of years and adding to the microplastic pollution.
At the plant, rubber, metals and other impurities will be removed from the PVC-u before it is sent to be processed.
Once recycled, the remanufacturing process will create new products. These include window and door profiles, sills and trims, as well as a more diverse range of products, such as cable management and construction products.
